On Monday, June 16, severe weather ripped through the Midwest and a pair of tornadoes devastated the small but mighty town of Pilger, Nebraska (pop. 378). According to reports, at least two people were killed, including a 5-year-old girl, and 16 were critically injured, while the town of Pilger itself was completely ripped apart — with Stanton County Sheriff Mike Unger calling the scene “total devastation” and estimating that 75% of Pilger was destroyed.

On Tuesday, rescue crews searched through rubble in Pilger as well as in nearby Wisner and Stanton for possible further victims trapped in debris. The American Red Cross has set up a shelter at Wisner-Pilger High School in Wisner, and is accepting donations for those affected by the storms here.

We also thought that since so many homes were destroyed, with most of families’ belongings wiped out, some new toys would maybe bring smiles and comfort to the kids of Pilger who have been displaced. (Toys will be purchased at a small, locally-owned store.)
