Langston Hughes once said, “A dream deferred is a dream denied.” Nebraska students who marched in Lincoln on Wednesday couldn’t agree more. That’s why they’re calling on Congress to pass the DREAM Act this year.

The DREAM Act would provide a path to citizenship for undocumented students who show good moral character and plan on attending college or serving at least 2 years in the military. The ultimate goal is to help students who entered the U.S. at a young age become fully engaged citizens with opportunities to pursue a post secondary education.

While an early version of the DREAM Act was introduced in 2001, it has been stalled in Congress every time it’s been reintroduced.

Nebraska students marched through UNL’s campus to the state Capitol building on Wednesday, calling on their federal legislators to finally pass the DREAM Act so 65,000 of their peers can pursue their dreams.

With immigration the hot topic for midterm elections, now is the perfect time to pressure our representatives and senators to stop deferring DREAM.
