Climate Forward Rally in DC

Jane Kleeb

, TransCanada Pipeline, #nokxl

National and state groups are joining citizens across our country to show up in large numbers to Washington DC on Feb. 17th for a pipeline and clean energy action called "Climate Forward." We need President Obama to know how many of us stand with him to reject TransCanada's Keystone XL permit for their dangerous export pipeline.

Bold and groups like Sierra Club and Farmers Union are using various transportation methods to get as many folks as possible to DC.

UPDATE: Eminent Domain Bill Introduced in Legislature, Hearing Announced

Ben Gotschall

On January 11, 2013, District 34 Senator Annette Dubas introduced LB152, which deals with eminent domain in our state.  The simple 2-page bill, though never specifically mentioning pipelines, could have huge implications when it comes to the Keystone XL pipeline and TransCanada.

The hearing for LB 152 will be held on Wednesday, January 30th, at 1:30 PM in Room 113 at the State Capitol. If you can not join us in-person, you can watch the hearing live on NET's website.

Heineman Flip Flops on Aquifer

Jane Kleeb

Gov. Heineman just performed one of the biggest flip-flops in Nebraska political history. He approved the pipeline route that crosses the Aquifer after he asked President Obama to deny the route that crossed the Aquifer.

Heineman turned his back on landowners and citizens who asked for an unbiased review of the risks of this pipeline. It is a shame when a politician these days can't cross party lines even to stand up for our water and family farmers and ranchers.

Tar Sands Produce Dirtiest Coal on the Planet, Too

Chelsea Johnson

Yesterday, Oil Change International released a report revealing how tar sands extraction hurts the climate even more than we have thought all along (yes, it's possible). While we have known since the start of the fight against the KXL that the process of digging up tar sands, processing it into diluted bitumen, and burning it as fuel is extremely carbon intensive, there is one piece that hasn't been included in any environmental review of the project: the byproduct of the dirtiest oil on the planet is the dirtiest coal on the planet. This should be the "final nail in the coffin" of the KXL if President Obama is serious about taking on climate change. The summary of the report is as follows; it's a must-read:
